About Fay’s Hypnotherapy Experience

Fay Hicks is a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Rapid Transformational Life Coach and qualified teacher with a background in Psychology, Education, autism, anxiety and neurodiversity.

Fay has experience supporting children and young people with a range of anxiety-related difficulties, including sleep issues, phobias, food avoidance, low confidence, bullying-related distress and emotionally based school avoidance.

Her hypnotherapy work with children is gentle, child-centred and consent-based. It is not about control, pressure or forcing change. Instead, it focuses on helping the young person feel calmer, safer and more confident within themselves.

Fay combines hypnotherapy with her wider experience in education, EBSA mentoring, autism support and parent guidance. This means the work is practical as well as emotional — helping children and families understand what may be underneath the anxiety while also building tools for calm, confidence and small realistic steps forward.

Within EBSA Reset, hypnotherapy may be used to support relaxation, emotional regulation, self-belief, confidence, sleep routines and the release of fears or unhelpful beliefs that may be holding the young person back.

Fay’s approach is neuro-affirming and compassionate. She understands that children experiencing EBSA are not being difficult or defiant — they are often overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted or feeling unsafe in situations that others may not fully understand.

The aim of hypnotherapy within EBSA Reset is not to “cure” a child or force attendance. It is to help them reconnect with their own strengths, feel more in control of their anxiety, and begin to believe that things can feel different.

Gentle hypnotherapy-informed support for confidence, calm and emotional safetyHypnotherapy can be a valuable part of EBSA Reset for some children and young people, especially where anxiety, fear, overwhelm or low confidence has started to feel bigger than their ability to cope.

The aim is not to “cure” EBSA, remove neurodivergence, or force a child back into school before they are ready. Instead, hypnotherapy is used gently to support relaxation, emotional regulation, confidence and self-belief.

For many children experiencing EBSA, school has begun to feel unsafe, overwhelming or impossible. Their body and nervous system may react with panic, shutdown, avoidance, tears, anger, stomach aches, exhaustion or fear.

Hypnotherapy-informed support can help a young person begin to practise feeling calmer inside, reconnect with their strengths, and build a more reassuring inner voice.

How hypnotherapy may help within EBSA Reset

Within EBSA Reset, hypnotherapy may be used to support:* relaxation and emotional regulation* confidence and self-belief* calming the body and mind* reducing the intensity of fear-based thoughts* preparing for small, realistic next steps* building a sense of safety and control* supporting rest, recovery and sleep routines* developing a calmer inner voice* gently releasing old fears, pressure or unhelpful beliefsHypnotherapy is not about control, pressure or making a child do something they do not want to do. The young person remains in control throughout. It is about helping them access a calmer, safer state where confidence and change can begin to feel more possible.

What it is not

Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medical advice, diagnosis, CAMHS, therapy, safeguarding support or statutory school support. It does not promise to cure EBSA, anxiety, autism, ADHD or any physical or mental health condition. Instead, it can sit alongside wider support as part of a compassionate, neuro-affirming approach. The focus is on helping the young person feel less trapped by anxiety and more connected to their own strengths, choices and ability to cope.

Personalised hypnotherapy audio

A key part of the support may be a calming hypnotherapy audio for the young person to listen to regularly between sessions. This audio may include relaxation, confidence-building language, positive suggestions, visualisation and gentle reassurance.Regular listening can help the young person practise a calmer response and reinforce the ideas explored during sessions. The audio is not a magic fix. It works best when used gently and consistently as part of a wider support plan. For some young people, the audio becomes a reassuring tool they can return to when they feel anxious, overwhelmed or unsure.

Releasing what has been holding them back

Some children and young people experiencing EBSA feel stuck, even when part of them wants things to change. They may be carrying fear, shame, pressure, memories of difficult experiences, or beliefs such as:“I can’t cope.”“Everyone will judge me.”“I’m not safe.”“I always get it wrong.”“I can’t do this anymore.”Hypnotherapy can support a young person to gently explore and release some of these emotional blocks, at their own pace. The aim is not to dismiss their worries or pretend everything is fine. The aim is to help them feel safer, stronger and more able to take small, realistic steps forward.

A child-centred and consent-based approach

Hypnotherapy is only used where it feels appropriate and with parental consent. The young person’s comfort, trust and readiness are always central. They do not have to do anything that feels uncomfortable, and they can stop at any time. For younger or more anxious children, hypnotherapy-informed work may be very gentle and may include relaxation, calming imagery, breathing, storytelling, confidence-building language or visualisation. For older children and teenagers, it may include deeper confidence work, emotional release, reframing anxious beliefs and building a stronger sense of identity beyond school anxiety.

How it fits into EBSA Reset

Hypnotherapy may be included as part of the wider EBSA Reset programme where appropriate. It supports the programme’s three core stages:

Stabilise

Helping the young person feel calmer, safer and less overwhelmed.

Understand

Exploring what may be underneath the anxiety, fear or shutdown response.

Rebuild

Supporting confidence, self-belief and small, realistic steps towards learning, connection and wider life.Hypnotherapy is not used as a standalone quick fix. It works best when combined with parent support, emotional regulation tools, practical strategies, school understanding and a realistic EBSA Reset Plan.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for every child?

Not every child or young person will want or need hypnotherapy, and that is completely okay. Some may benefit more from mentoring, parent support, regulation strategies, school planning or confidence-building activities first. If hypnotherapy feels suitable, it will be discussed carefully and introduced gently. The most important thing is that the young person feels safe, respected and understood.

In summary

Hypnotherapy within EBSA Reset is used to support calm, confidence, emotional safety and self-belief.It is not about curing EBSA or forcing attendance. It is about helping the young person become less controlled by fear and more connected to their own strengths, choices and ability to cope. For some young people, regular listening to a calming hypnotherapy audio can become a powerful part of their reset — helping them practise calm, confidence and emotional safety one step at a time.
